A Brief History

A quick history about the EFL; The grassroots of EFL go back to the early 1900s when it was known as the Reporter District Football League with only a few teams involved.

There were several name changes to the league as more teams became involved before it became the Eastern District Football League in 1962. In 1997 after years of the Knox Junior Football Association having a league with junior teams in the area the leagues merged and the EFL was formed.

The league grew from 60 teams in 1962 to 462 teams in 2012.

There are now 44 senior clubs and 34 junior clubs ranging from all sorts of areas such as Lilydale, Montrose, Mulgrave and Nunawading among many others.

There are four different divisions for Seniors, Reserves and Under 19s as well as a A,B,C,D divisions from under 17s down to under 9s.

There is also two under 8 divisions as well as veterans league that consists of 11 teams.

The EFL has a number of major sponsors that include Nine News, the Bendigo Community Bank and SEN.

The EFL is now the largest Australian Football competition in the country.
